Marilynn Ann Hughes
Marilynn Ann Hughes (née Whaite), 84, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025, in Chatham, Virginia.
Born on September 30, 1940, in Nicholson, Pennsylvania, Marilynn lived a life marked by compassion, dedication, and a deep love for animals and the natural world. She retired from the state of Pennsylvania after a fulfilling career as a supervisor at the welcome center in Lenox, PA. Her professional life reflected her welcoming spirit and commitment to service.
Marilynn's generosity extended far beyond her career. She was an active volunteer throughout her life, giving her time and energy to organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Adopt a Highway, the local Recycling Center, Salt Springs Park, and the BC Humane Society-where she was honored as Volunteer of the Year. Her tireless efforts made a lasting impact on her community and the causes she held dear.
A devoted animal lover, Marilynn rescued numerous cats and dogs over the years and supported many shelters and wildlife agencies. Her home was a sanctuary not only for pets but for all creatures-she welcomed even spiders with kindness and respect. Her flower gardens were lovingly cultivated to support local wildlife habitats, attracting birds and other visitors that brought her great joy. Whether hiking through nature or enjoying happy hour with friends, Marilynn found beauty in simple pleasures.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Renee Hughes Metzger and Tamara Hughes Gomersall; sons-in-law Andreas Metzger and Greg Gomersall; her brother Raymond Whaite; and her dear friend Susie Brant. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Ivah Whaite.
In accordance with Marilynn's wishes, no funeral services will be held. To honor her memory and lifelong devotion to animals, donations may be made to True Friends Animal Rescue in Montrose, PA or BC Humane Society in Binghamton, NY.
May Marilynn's memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire acts of kindness toward all living beings.
