Mark "Butch" Forest Wimmer, Jr. Obituary Mark “Butch” Forest Wimmer, Jr., 82, passed away at his residence on December 12, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer.Mark was born on October 3, 1942, to the late Mark Forest Wimmer, Sr. and Alice Maxey Wimmer and grew up in Salem, Virginia. After graduating from Andrew Lewis High School in 1961, he went on to attend William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. Mark also served in the United States Army Reserve for six years.Mark worked for 42 years as a Construction Inspector for the Virginia Department of Transportation, retiring at the age of 63.Mark felt most at home in the mountains of Salem, Va. He developed a love of hunting and spent many years hunting deer and turkey but was most drawn to coon hunting. Mark could be found often by the light of the moon with his dogs singing in harmony, in the hills surrounding his home. Mark carried with him this love of hunting for many years. In later years, even though Mark’s knees prevented him from continuing these nighttime excursions, he surrounded himself with the keepsakes of a hunter and his dog.Surviving Mark are his wife of 61 years, Gypsey Robertson Wimmer; son, Mark Thomas Wimmer and his wife, Amy; daughter, Elizabeth Anne Stockton and her husband, Russ; grandchildren, Benjamin Greer Stockton, Drew Elizabeth Basham, Elle Wimmer Balph, and Alex Riggs Wimmer; as well as his brother, Woodrow Maxey Wimmer and his wife, Sharon Gray Wimmer.Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside service to be held at East Hill Cemetery, Salem, on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. and officiated by Pastor Barry Fitzgerald.The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice for their compassionate care and kindness.
