Martha Hicks Herndon

Martha Hicks Herndon, age 98, of Monroe, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Born on September 19, 1927, in Monroe, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Calvin Hicks and Elsie J. Hicks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert N. Herndon Sr., and four brothers.

Martha dedicated much of her working life to service and education. She was employed at the Central Virginia Training Center and was also a retired teacher. Alongside her late husband, she was a former owner of H & H Produce.

Known by her family as a true “Southern Lady,” Martha never met a stranger. This was especially evident during her time at Fairmont Crossing Health & Rehab Center, where she formed many friendships. One of her favorite sayings, often shared with pride, was “Keep money in Amherst County.”

She is survived by her two children, Martha Ann Sanita (Jerry) and Robert “Bobby” Herndon Jr. (Lorraine); numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Hicks Family Farm in Monroe at a later date.
