Mary Alice Hudson Menefee
On Sunday September 17, 2023, Mary Alice Hudson Menefee passed away in her sleep at the age of 96. Mary Alice was born on August 11, 1927 in Rocky Mount, Va. She was the daughter of Reginald Oliver Hudson and Tressie Bennett Hudson. On September 16, 1950 she married Charles Garrett Menefee of Rocky Mount, Va. After many years of moving around the country, she and Charles settled in Richmond, Va. from 1968 until the present time. Mary Alice retired from Henrico County Public Schools where she worked as a school secretary. She was a lifelong learner who took college courses later in life to enhance her ability to perform her job with the greatest skill and knowledge. She was active in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Lady's Circle in Richmond as well as the Garden Club and Bridge Clubs. She was an active and talented seamstress who won many awards for her creative needlework. Mary Alice also volunteered regularly to read with elementary school students to help them improve their skills. Mary Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her younger sister, Doris Burgess of Rocky Mount and her younger brother, Gerald Hudson, also of Rocky Mount. She is survived by her son, Charles G. Menefee, Jr. (Susan) of Richmond, her daughter, Lynn M. Dzyak (Phil) of Springfield and her daughter, Mary Susan Menefee of Richmond.; four grandchildren, Anne and Bill Menefee, Mary Dzyak Pfiester (Eric) and Laura Dzyak; as well as two great-granddaughters, Kaylee and Avrie Pfiester. The funeral for Mary Alice will be held on Saturday, September 30 at 11 a.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151. The family will receive friends and extended family one hour prior to the service.
