Mary Elizabeth Winn Shipe

August 18, 1927 - January 16, 2024

Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Shipe, 96, of Salem, Va., passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

Libby was a true “Southern Genteel Lady” who loved to help and uplift everyone she knew. She was an accountant for years, a devoted wife to “her Jack,” a loving mother, and a true homemaker. She loved reading, being with her family and friends, and traveling with Jack to the beach or wherever. She was also an avid nature lover. She was faithful to her Lord and read daily passages from her Bible and inspirational books. She also enjoyed sharing her early morning talks with the Lord to plan her day. She was a charter member of Eternal Hope Baptist Church in Salem, Va. “To know her is to love her” fits her to a “T”. She will be missed!

She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph Muscoe and Nannie “Rose” Helms Winn; step-mother, Ann Wyatt Winn Boswell; husband of 60 years, Jack Bertram Shipe; sisters, Pauline Muller, Nannie Ruth (Richard) Blackard, and Margaret (J.E.) Kellam; brothers, Irving Simmons, J.M. (Dee), Mike (Nellie), and Ben Carr, Sr. (Ann); and several nieces and nephews.

Her surviving family includes her son, William “Bill” Shipe; grandchildren, Kellie (Chip) Lester, Allen, Jason, Vincent, and Jennifer (Brent); nieces and nephews, Sue (Paul) Nickelston, Joe (Michiko) Kellam, Ben Winn, Jr., Joe (Juanita) May, Dell May, and Susan (J.B.) Emmert; and other loving family members and friends.

The family gives a special thank you to special friend and neighbor, Lu All; friend of the heart, caretakers, and confidant for many years, Rita Layne, also to Belinda Sink, Marilyn Holley, and Cheyanna Forson; and Good Samaritan Hospice of Roanoke, Va., for lending help and support.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date under the direction of J. David Rorer, pastor and friend.
