Maxine Smith

Mrs. Betty Maxine Peters Smith, age 84, of Covington, died Friday, September 5, 2025, at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, Low Moor. She was the wife of Ira Franklin Smith.
Mrs. Smith was born September 18, 1940 in Alleghany County, the daughter of the late David Peters and Blanch Andrews Peters. She was employed as a bookkeeper for the former First Virginia Bank in Covington before a number of years before her retirement. Mrs. Smith was a member of Greenwood Presbyterian Church. In her spare time, Maxine enjoyed doing puzzle books, being outdoors and riding in the car enjoying the countryside. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Ira, Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Ira Franklin Smith, Jr. and wife, Margaret; two daughters, Kimberly Dawn Nicely of Colonial Heights, VA and Amy Denise Boguess and husband, Roger of Covington; six grandchildren, Brett Smith, Shawnee Smith, Megan Nicely, William Nicely, Dale Boguess and Austin Boguess; five great grandchildren, Grayson Smith, Baylor Smith, Maelynn Jorgenson, Wrenley Jorgensen and Makenna Morefield; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, David and Blanch Peters, Mrs. Peters was preceded in death by her siblings, Wilbur, Tommy, Jimmy, Charlie, Edward, Lucille, Christine and Mary.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 9, 2025 from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating. Interment will be in Emory United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Austin Boguess, Dale Boguess, William Nicely, Brett Smith, T.J. Morefield, Eddie Smith, Cody Ellison and Willie Nicely. Alternate pallbearers will be Mert Chambers and David Byer.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday afternoon from 12:30 P.M. until time of service.
