Melvin Odell Dalton
Melvin Odell Dalton, known by those who knew him as “Mo” or “M.O.,” passed away on August 1, 2024. Mo was born on June 8, 1936, in Patrick County, VA to the late Grace and Roosevelt Dalton. He is survived by his wife Scottie Pettigrew; his daughters Wendy Hopkins (Wade) and Cindy Snead; his grandchildren, Tamara Martin, Jeffery Snead, Brennan Hopkins and Christian Hopkins; his great grandchildren, Kayla Saul, Tatiana Martin, Kennady Martin and Taegan Martin; and one great, great grandchild, Abravien Smith, Jr.; and his brother, David Dalton (Helen). Mo was predeceased by his daughter and son-in-law Theresa and Jeff Argraves.
Mo served his country in the United States Air Force and the Danville community as a member of the Danville Police Department for 30 years. In his prime he loved church league softball, keeping his lawn manicured, washing and waxing his cars, eating and spending time with his family. He was an active member of the former Southall Baptist Church and North Main Baptist Church where he served Jesus Christ as a Sunday school teacher, choir member and deacon. He had a winsome personality and loved to talk to people.
The family wishes to say a heartfelt thank you to Scottie Pettigrew, Sheila Perry (Grey), Kelli Poteat (Ron), Marshall Pettigrew (Donna) and their families for bringing joy into the last years of Mo’s life. A special thank you to Beverly Dalton (predeceased wife), Karla Partin (Rick), Paul King (Jetti), Karen King and their families for special memories created during that season of Mo’s life. Thank you to Commonwealth Hospice (Lisa, Teneka and Melissa) for providing loving, compassionate, tender and professional care to Mo. Thank you to Cardinal Senior Living, the staff and residents, for accepting Mo and making him feel at home during his final months; we couldn’t have cared for him without you.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2024 at 2:00pm at Highland Burial Park, Danville, Virginia officiated by his son-in-law, Wade Hopkins. The family will receive friends and family at the graveside immediately after the gathering.
