Michael Allen Metz
Michael Allen Metz, 68, passed away peacefully at home on Friday September 26, 2025 after a long illness. Michael was born in Roanoke, Virginia to Betty Jean Davis and George Allen Metz on July 4, 1957. Michael earned a Bachelor Degree in Psychology from Virginia Tech and Masters and E.Ds.. degrees from Radford University.
After graduating, he dedicated his career to working with at-risk children and youth. He worked at Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth in Canaan, NY, Hughes Memorial Home in Danville, VA, and Youth Haven II in Roanoke, VA. In the later part of his career, he worked as a Foster Care Supervisor at the Roanoke County Department of Social Services in Salem, VA. Upon retiring in 2012, he continued to contribute his knowledge and expertise, working as a trainer for the Virginia Department of Social Services.
In retirement, Michael loved spending more time with his partner, traveling on beach trips, going to music events, taking drives in his new sports car, and savoring summer time fun. He was overjoyed to watch his children succeed in their endeavors and celebrate those accomplishments, and to welcome two granddaughters into the world.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his loving partner of 24 years, Dawn Caldwell, who gave him great comfort over the years and cared for him during his illness; sister, Cindy Metz (Tom Deane); his children, Jeffrey Davis Metz (Sarah) and Lauren Jeanne Metz; their mother, Claire Goyette Metz; his granddaughters, Marley Jean Metz and Heidi Anne Metz.
The family is grateful for the care Michael received from all of the staff at the Blue Ridge Cancer Center and Good Samaritan Hospice.
An informal visitation will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025 from 2 pm to 4 pm at Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory, 3912 Electric Road. Casual attire is encouraged.
Close friends and family are invited to visit at Michael’s home following the visitation.
