Michael John Gourley
With deepest sorrow, we announce that Michael John Gourley, age 36, our most beloved son, brother, uncle, family member, and friend passed suddenly on Saturday, June 24, 2023.
Those who knew Michael, even just a little, know that we lost a shining light in our lives. His time on earth was too short, but he touched so many lives with his kind, generous, loving heart. He loved his nieces and nephews, playing golf and was passionate about spending time with friends and all that knew him, loved him.
Michael is survived by his father, John Gourley, mother Virginia Sanchez, Grandmother Earline Gosney, sisters Angela Gourley Doughty (Paul), Laura Gourley Schoonover (Brandon), and Jessica Gourley (Kristy). He adored his nieces and nephews, Allyson Rocha, Preston LaPoint, Carter, Peyton, Katelyn and Brayden Doughty, and Leah and Luke Schoonover. He is survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He loved his late grandparents, Charles and Frances Gourley.
He was a George Washington High School graduate. He went on to graduate Cum Laude from Radford University in 2008 with a degree in Criminal Justice. He then earned a Master’s Degree in Business from Arkansas University in 2017. He was compassionate and dedicated to serving his community in many ways. Michael was a dedicated Police Officer and Investigator with the Danville Police Department for 12 years.
A celebration of life will be held at Dan River Church at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 30, 2023, with Pastor Scott Randlett officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at the church and at other times at the residence of Michael’s mother.
