Michael O. Motley

February 9, 1964 - February 20, 2024

With bittersweet sorrow and gratitude, the Motley family announces the passing of our kind, brave, caring and loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, Michael Oneal Motley, at age 60.

Mike graduated from Lord Botetourt High School and worked in the food and service industry where he met the love of his life.  His career path took him across many jobs and industries before becoming the successful business owner of Appalachian Building Concepts. Mike had countless friends, colleagues, and acquaintances and his lifelong wife, Patricia Williams. Their love and connection to each other was a rarity found amongst few.

Mike and Pat provided their sons, Elijah Motley and Isaac Motley with all the love, comfort, hospitality, humor and stability a family could ask for. He was active and present in their lives through Boy Scouts, vacations, game nights, outdoor activities, and sporting events. He always had an open heart and listening ear.

Mike was family oriented and had a close-knit bond with his sisters, Jill Motley Cutright and Teri Motley Smith.  They were not only siblings but best friends.  Mike was the leader of the 3 Musketeers.

Mike had a personality that was vibrant and bright. He was a man of strong faith and perseverance.  When he was in your presence, he lit the room up with his great story telling capabilities. His crinkling eyes would brighten, booming voice projected and laughter flowed from his belly as he told his narratives making you feel as if you were a part of the story and wondering if it was truth or fiction.  He loved to laugh and have you laugh with him.

He loved the freedom of riding his motorcycle and ATVs, the tranquility of the Outer Banks, attending concerts, and time spent with friends.  His friendships were lifelong and treasured by him.  He was benevolent with his heart, words, family and time shared with others.

On June 29, 2021, Mike had a life altering injury. He remained positive, inspiring others to not have sympathy for him as “accidents happen” when he became paralyzed.  His health took a major decline in May 2023 after losing his legs to infection.

His devout faith, spirit, and stubbornness had served him well throughout his life. And even in his waning months, his body was a model of strong will and sheer determination right up until the end of his journey here on earth, February 20, 2024.

Mike is survived by his wife Patricia, sons Elijah and Isaac, sisters Jill and Teri, and beloved family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Oneal Motley and Gail Marsh.

Mike’s burial and wake will be on February 24, 2024 at 2237 Paris Mountain Road, Elliston VA 24087. Mike did not want a somber funeral, so please dress biker casually, refrain from eulogies, and prepare for a (hopefully outdoor) party celebrating his life.
