Nancy Hicks Montgomery
Nancy Hicks Montgomery, 86, of Salem passed away on February 27, 2024.
Nancy was born in Carroll County, Virginia on December 6, 1937, the 10th of 12 children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orben and Bertha Hicks; and siblings, Claudia Hicks, Zelma Utt, Alva Bryant, Mary Mabry, Luria Warner, Marion Hicks, Eileen Phillips, and Mallie Dalton. She was also preceded in death by her very close and loved family friend Loraine Whitley. They shared many family gatherings, trips and Friday and Saturday night card games.
Nancy loved the Lord and all of her church family. She was a member, attended and served her Lord at Edgewood Christian Church for over 60 years. Nancy worked for many years as secretary to the Loyal Daughters and Young at Heart groups. Nancy was involved with organizing and catering many church lunch and dinner functions. She worked for years in the VBS programs. Nancy was an avid bowler and bowling secretary for over 50 years. She was inducted into the Roanoke Valley Bowling Hall of Fame. She served many years on the Bowling Association and Virginia Bowling State Board. She loved all her bowling family. Nancy loved to watch sports and was a die-hard UVA fan and Atlanta Braves fan. Her favorite team though was whoever her grandchildren played for. Nancy hardly missed a game or an event that her children or grandkids participated in. Nancy worked for years as the precinct chief for elections at Beverly Heights subdivision where she lived for over 60 years. Those that worked with her were treated for the day with homecooked food, cakes and homemade pimento cheese. City of Salem officials would come by just to get the many foods she brought in for the day and many of her treats were by request year after year.
She will be missed by all that knew her and all the lives she touched.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 64 years, Arnold Montgomery; three children, Connie Lowe and husband Jeff, Dana Akers and husband John, and Barry Montgomery and wife Lisa; Emily Kennedy (Mimmy), eleven grandchildren, Elisabeth Kennedy, Dr. Lauren Kennedy, Brett Kennedy, Alexis Lowe, Maggie Akers, Sarah Givens, Danielle Andrews, Bethany Roatenberry, Taylor Montgomery, Lindsay Montgomery, and Katelyn Montgomery; three great grandchildren, Palmer Claire Kennedy, Claudia Merle Harvey, and Opal Mae Givens, with five more on the way this summer and early fall; and three loved siblings, Edna Spencer, Harley Hicks, and Arlie (PeeWee) Mabry.
If you received a pound cake or a coveted pumpkin cake roll from her– count yourself very lucky. She loved taking cakes, chicken salad, pimento cheese or her famous potato salad to anyone she heard may need a lift either from sickness or a death in their family.
We would also like to acknowledge and say a huge thank you to our neighbors, Katherine & Jay Chandler, Lois Perdue, Jim & Sharon Galbraith, and Tom Nicodemus. There are not enough words to say thank you for all your help in checking in, bringing food and just being there.
The family will receive friends at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 12:00 until 1:00 pm. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Lotz Funeral Home with Pastor David Workman officiating.
I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteousness Judge will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
2 Timothy 4: 7 - 8
