Nancy Sligh McCormick
Nancy Sligh McCormick, 78, of 1500 Blackburn St, Lynchburg died Monday January 27th 2025 surrounded by her family.
Born March 5th 1946, she was the daughter of the late Harry Marshall Sligh and Minnie Thomas Abbott.
She was a member of Sandusky Baptist Church and was retired from Parker Integrated Sealing System.
Nancy had a remarkable ability to care for others, a trait evident in her many roles as wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her passions in life were as varied as they were vibrant. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed sharing meals, volunteered with meals on wheels and a woman of faith, often volunteering in the church nursery & with vacation bible school. Some of her favorite things involved being surrounded by people she loved the most at holiday events, family gatherings, festivals & cookouts. She was a good dancer and loved music, particularly the tunes of Elvis Presley, local singer Dorrie Self and her brother in law gospel singer Smokey Wilson. She cherished the time spent with family and friends including lifelong friends Vivian Davis, Gloria Baitey and Sharon Trent. She had a passion for old sporty muscle cars, the beach, her chicken collection and her many beautiful flowers. Nancy’s life was a testament to the joy of giving and the beauty of human connection.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter Shelia Annette Layne, her stepfather Billy Abbott, her brother in laws; Bob Hughes & WT McCormick, and her sister in law, Kathy Stanley.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 32 years, Kenneth Ray McCormick, her children; three daughters Vicky Layne Campbell (Tony), Lisa Layne Mitchell (David), Tammy Layne Shoemaker & one son Robert Morris Layne (Kelly); three grandsons: Anthony Jarrett Layne, Colby Randall Layne and Dalton Shoemaker; one granddaughter Amanda Mitchell Schmitt(Jason) and one great granddaughter, Nora Jean Schmitt. She is also survived by one brother Danny Ray Abbott (Kathy), two sisters; Carolyn Sligh Hughes & Brenda Abbott Wilson (Smokey); two sister in laws, Debbie McCormick and Molly McCormick; one brother in law, Donnie McCormick (Crystal); one uncle Sherman Sligh (Barbara) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She held a special place in her heart for children and animals including her beloved dog Buddy.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at 11:00am at Whitten Monelison Chapel in Madison Heights, Virginia, with Pastor Jerry Childress officiating. Interment will immediately follow service at Virginia Memorial Park in Forest, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm on Monday February 3, 2025 at Whitten Monelison Chapel. The family extends it’s gratitude to Whitten Monelison Chapel for assisting with arrangements. Nancy Sligh McCormick will be remembered as a woman of love and laughter, who touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
