Patricia Elaine Wood Crawley

May 9, 1938 - April 5, 2024

Patricia Elaine Wood Crawley passed away peacefully, with her loved ones by her side, on April 5, 2024. She was born May 9, 1938 in Gretna, Virginia, the daughter of John Nelson and Margaret Worsham Wood. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill Gray, daughter Jennifer Elaine Crawley, sisters Margaret Wood Wells and Laura Ellen Wood, brother Landon Nelson (Jack) Wood, and stepson Odell W. Gray, III.

Pat graduated from Gretna High School and enjoyed attending her high school reunions. She graduated from Danville Memorial School of Nursing, which began her 40 plus year career in health care. She became employed by Ferrum College as a registered nurse and was there for 29 years, retiring as the Director of Student Health Services in 2000. She greatly loved her time at Ferrum and was very involved with the students on campus from promoting Bacchus, mock tails, and healthy life choices to helping out when those recommendations weren’t followed. She also enjoyed taking art classes, attending the Folk Life Festival, and the lifelong friendships she developed while there.

While at Ferrum, she earned her Associate Degree and went on to Mary Baldwin College to complete her Bachelor Degree.

She enjoyed travelling, especially with her late husband Bill Gray. She took trips across the United States and to Mexico and Canada, and multiple other ports of call.

Pat loved her opportunity to do missionary work at Standing Rock Indian Reservation in the Dakotas and would share stories of that experience often.

She was an active member of Cooper’s Cove Baptist Church in Hardy, Virginia, where over the years she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU).

Pat was very much a helper and, despite her personal battle with Parkinson’s disease, was active in a number of groups and organizations that gave back to those in need, including foot health care, women in need, and afterschool and food stability programs for children.

Pat is survived by her daughter, Laura Crawley Osborne and her husband Lin Osborne of Cary, North Carolina; stepdaughter, Karen Gray Leary and her husband Jonathan of Salem, Virginia; step-grandchildren, Will and Abby Gray; nephews, Harvey Wells and Charles (Yvonne) Wells; and multiple grandnieces; and special family friends, Rathin and Supriya Basu and Ragini (Basu) Messier.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of HeartFields at Cary and Ageility Physical Therapy for the care and kindness they showed Patricia while she was a resident there.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park, Danville.
