Paul Raymond Shreves

April 11, 1937 - May 1, 2023

Paul Raymond Shreves, Jr. “Junior”, age 86 of Glade Hill passed away Monday, May 1, 2023 with his family by his side. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Rebecca Carter Shreves; mother, Phyllis Stead Shreves; father, Raymond Shreves; grandson, Christian Placer; daughter, Michelle Shreves; brother, William “Bill” Shreves; and his beloved pups, Beaver and Sam. Born and raised in Sistersville, WV. He graduated Sistersville High School 1955, as the all-star champion quarterback of the SHS Tigers, leading them to their first state football championship in the history of the school.

Junior received many scholarships from various colleges for his athletics, attended WV Tech and started his freshman year as first-string player, but chose to start a family instead after the first year. He enjoyed playing with golf pros and caddied for Sam Snead. He worked for Western Electric and AT&T for many years as a supervisor and helped bring the new technology of fiber optics to AT&T from MIT. After retiring from AT&T, he started his own telecommunications company, Eastern Telecommunications, Inc, from 1989 to 2000.

He loved football, ACC basketball, golf (watching and playing), fishing, Pinochle, Poker, Blackjack, casinos, computer Solitaire and Spider, playing the stock market, and eating good country cooking. He worked hard for a comfortable lifestyle and enjoyed his television, pinto beans, cornbread, and prime rib steaks. With a rebellious spirit and big sense of humor, he led life “his way” and traveled extensively. Later in life, he enjoyed visiting family and traveling to see the grandchildren in their sports games and dance recitals.

Surviving are his children, Melissa Freeze (Tony) of Glade Hill, David Biggs of Cherokee, Arkansas, Debbie Adkins Foley of Snow Creek, Crystal Naff (Michael) of Callaway, Jenny Flora (Andy) of Rocky Mount, Bethany Moore (John) of Staunton; grandchildren, Mandy (Ben) Placer, Jamey Mathis, Mikey Mathis, Roxanne McManamay, JW Workman, Ridge Adkins, Rachael Naff, Lauren Naff, Jacob Flora, Hannah Harris, Sara Moore; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; siblings, Donna Jo (Charles) Higginbotham of Parkersburg, WV, Cindy (Tom) Carson, of Sistersville, WV, and Kim (Wayne) Maxwell of Friendly, WV; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers (or “junk” as Junior called them), donations can be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren, or any local sports team.

Funeral services will be conducted at Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren, 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2023. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. His family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
