Pauline "Polly" Rakes Bocock

March 7, 1933 - November 1, 2022

Our beloved mother, Pauline Rakes “Polly” Bocock, age 89, passed peacefully into the gates of heaven on November 1, 2022. Polly was born on March 7, 1933 to Maude Shough Rakes and George Robert Rakes. Polly endured many tragedies as a child — including the death of her mother at the age of 9, the loss of a brother in a car accident, and the loss of a niece while babysitting. In her adolescent years, she worked hard and lived with her siblings, but didn’t have a stable home until after she married our Dad at the age of 20. Together, they worked to build a life—to build their home and family. Mom was most proud of being in the first graduating class of LPN’s from Martinsville Hospital in 1966. She was very smart…she could sew, crochet, and paint ceramics. She taught children’s Sunday school at Fieldale Baptist Church. She loved WMU and her “CIRCLE” meetings. She and Dad were also part of the adult choir “The Keenagers” for many years. Her favorite “flavor” was SALT and we all know her favorite color was PINK. She loved to talk on the phone which was her lifeline to the rest of the world. This became more important as she began to age. Polly was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Richard Leo Bocock. Left to cherish her memory are her children Richard “Rick” Bocock (Candice) of Texas, Kathy Cline (Danny) of Dry Fork, and Sherry Quinley (Patrick) of Roanoke. She was also blessed with eight grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Rev. Robert “Bobby” Rakes and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday, November 4, 2022, at 11:00am at Fieldale Baptist Church with a celebration of life to follow. Her brother, Rev. Bobby Rakes will preside. A private family internment will follow at Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery. Many thanks to the caregivers who worked hard to allow Mom to stay in her home. We greatly appreciate Vicky Manley and her staff for their attentive care the past few weeks. Mom could never understand why she was left behind four years without “her Richard.” She loved her family; even when she had little breath and could only whisper, she said, “ I will love you until I have no breath.” LOVE, LOVE, LOVE you Mom—until we meet again.
