Phyllis Ann Purita
Phyllis Ann Purita, a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the age of 69.
Born on October 10, 1955 in Brooklyn, New York, Phyllis grew up in Freeport, NY before settling in Amherst, Virginia, where she made her home for the past 52 years.
Phyllis met the love of her life, Clementino “Bob” Purita, when she was just 15 years old. Their bond grew strong over the years, and they were married in 1973, beginning a beautiful journey together. Phyllis was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word—selfless, nurturing, and the heart of her family. Her joy was found in caring for others, and she showed her love through her cooking, her presence, and the warmth of her home.
She was the beloved wife of Clementino “Bob” Purita, with whom she shared over 50 years of marriage. Together they raised three children, Menti (Katina), Michael (Maleah), and Zoe (Donald). She was also a proud and loving grandmother to three grandsons, Preston, Ethan, and Austin.
Phyllis is survived by her husband Bob; her children; her sister Nadine Higuchi; her brother Samuel Higuchi; and many nieces and nephews who were dear to her. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Angelina and Albert Higuchi; her sister Annette Walter; and her brother Al Higuchi.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Whitten Monelison Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at Whitten Monelison Chapel at 1:00 pm with Deacon Mark De La Hunt officiating.
