Phyllis Elaine Garrett

Phyllis Elaine Garrett, 97, of Salem, Va., went to be with the Lord in Heaven on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. She is now together with her family and friends having a big party!

Affectionately known as “Mama Till,” she enjoyed needlework, antiques, estate sales, reading, and traveling – especially to the beach. She touched the lives of many in Salem, young and old, and was well loved by all. She was retired from General Electric, and was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death was her spouse, Harold “Gob” Garrett; parents, Daniel and Onie Palmer; sister, Sue Wise and husband, Roy; foster daughter, Laura Goodpasture; grandchild, Denise Goodpasture; daughter-in-law, Karen Garrett; brother, Sonny Palmer; and brothers-in-law, Bill Hodges and Tommy Carroll.

Her surviving family includes her son, Danny Garrett and wife, Judy; daughter, Susan Mennel and husband, John; grandchildren, Martha Wade, John Garrett, Dana Garrett, Kerry and Cynthia Hurley, Bill and Lori Goodpasture, Samantha and Ken Barney, Karen Goodpasture, Daniel “Shep” and Christine Garrett, Kris Judd, Jay and Amanda Mennel, and Katie and Brett Gleason; great-grandchildren, Justin Wade, Jeremy Wade, Kelsey Kingery, Jennifer Garrett, Nikki Phelps, Lucas Barney, Meredith Barney, J.T. Judd, Lizzie Judd, Michael Ferguson, Ellie Gleason, Ava Gleason, Beckett Gleason, London Gleason, Kai Gleason, Sawyer Gleason, Tyler Garrett, Garrett Mennel, and Graham Mennel; and great-great-grandchildren, A’Darius Pitt and Kairi Kingery; sister, June Hodges; nieces, Peggy Hodges, Mary Scribner, and Kay Hurst and husband, Dave; great-nephew, Ronnie Trathen; and great-nieces, Krisi Silvers and Adrien Scribner.

Family members and friends will be celebrating her life on Thursday, May 18, 2023, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, Va. The visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with the service at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
