Ray Marshall Chaney

Ray Marshall Chaney, 81, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2024, at this residence. He was born on September 14, 1942, in Patrick County, Virginia, to the late Marshall Jefferson Chaney and Dorothy Clark Chaney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, G.W. Gammons.

Ray was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he was an even better storyteller. He enjoyed bluegrass music, watching television, specifically westerns, classic cars, and moonshining. You would find him sporting his bib overalls, which he referred to as his “Patrick County Tuxedo.”

Ray is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Janie McBride Chaney; one son, Tony Ray Chaney (Sheila); two daughters, Shannon Renea Gammons and Melinda Rayshell Rollins (James); five grandchildren, Bailey (Nick), Hunter, Hannah (Matthew), Matthew, Melody; and three great grandchildren, Adley, Jackson Marshall, and Anakin; two brothers, Alfred Chaney and Lonnis Chaney; two sisters, his twin, Rebecca Chaney Mabe (Doyle), and Lois Chaney Triplett (Bobby); his special cat, Lyla, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 12, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Ross Harbour United Methodist Church, with Pastor Ron Peal officiating.
