Richard Cecil Montgomery
Richard Cecil Montgomery, 80, of Ridgeway, Virginia, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2023, at his residence. He was born November 22, 1942, in Logan, West Virginia, to the late George E. Montgomery and Louise Ferrell Montgomery.
He graduated from Lenore High School, Lenore, West Virginia in 1960 and from Marshall University with a Bachelor of Science & biology degree. He also received a masters degree in health and P.E. from Morehead University. Richard had been an educator in Mingo County, West Virginia for 33 years. Upon retirement to North Carolina, he taught driver’s education to students with handicapped disabilities.
While in West Virginia, he attended Matewan United Methodist Church, and when home, he was very blessed to be able to attend Rich Acres Church drive in services.
He loved all sports, and coached basketball, football, baseball, and track all through various stages of his career. He loved to hunt, fish, play golf, and garden. He enjoyed just being outdoors. He had a great sense of humor and was known to play jokes on family and friends. He loved the Lord, reading the Bible, and listening to sermons.
Richard is survived by his wife, Marsha Lynn Phillips Montgomery; daughter, Christen Ashley Montgomery; son, Stephen Lee Hickok (Ashley); cousins, Betty Ferrell Bromberg, Jerry Walters, Helen Walter Muncy, Joe Ferrell, and Rocky Ferrell. He was also preceded in death by dear cousins Patty Williams, Peggy Ferrell Seaman, and Carol Ferrell Ramey. Survivors also include two grandsons whom he loved dearly. Morris Lee Hickok and Beau Wahler Hickok.
Through the years he was also blessed with many generations of wonderful family, friends, students, and co-workers.
Family and friends will gather for a Memorial service at the Ferrell Family Cemetery, in Lenore, West Virginia on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 11 AM with Reverend G.W. Mounts officiating.
