Riley Sampson

Mr. Riley Darrell Sampson, age 82, of Covington, died Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at his residence. Mr. Sampson was born January 31, 1943 in Covington, the son of the late Joseph Sampson and Elvira Wilhelm Sampson. He spent a tour in the Army and worked a short time at Krogers. He retired in 2010 after working forty-two years in the storeroom at MeadWestvaco. He was an active member of the Jaycee's back in the day. He enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, playing golf and mostly shooting pool before his health began to fail. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR races. Surviving are his life-partner, best friend and caregiver, Julie McCormack; son, Darrell Allen Sampson; sister, Juanita Musser, all of Covington; brother, Gene Sampson of Roanoke; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sampson was preceded in death by five sisters, Violet Hayward, Ruby Leffel, Phyllis Booth, Irene Aynes and Shirley Burdette; and two brothers, Wayne Sampson and Basil Sampson. According to his wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no formal service. However, if anyone wants to come by the residence, you are welcome to stop in and chat.
