Rodney Craig Simpson

July 3, 1964 - September 28, 2023

Our Dearly Beloved Rodney “Rock” Craig Simpson transitioned from this realm of life peacefully in the comfort of his home on September 28, 2023.

Rodney began his early education in Bladen County in North Carolina and his later years of education were in Brooklyn, New York.

He worked many jobs as he was a very industrious worker who wanted nothing more than to provide for his family. His last and final job was here in Salem Virginia, at BGDC Distribution Center, for 24 years.

Rodney was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Simpson Bush; his maternal grandparents Ulice and Lillie Bordeaux; and his aunt Ellouise Brown. Rodney is survived by his loving daughter Tanora and his son Ronell; the love of his heart grandson Ronell Jr.; The love of his life (mother of his children) Lashawn Tillery carries a special place in his heart. He is also survived by his sister Michelle Simpson of Greensboro, North Carolina; his brother Kevin Simpson (Marilyn) of Charleston, South Carolina; and one aunt, Anita Mckoy (Aunt Di) of Elizabethtown, North Carolina. Rodney leaves a host of other family members and friends who will miss him including a special niece Airman First Class Chalice Simpson (Air Force). We cannot leave out his precious fur babies Thor and Zeus.

His favorite sports team was the Dallas Cowboys. He loved to play basketball and excelled at any sport that he chose. He ran track in high school and participated in numerous other sports. He had a special bond with his grandson who lovingly called him (Pop Pop). The two of them spent a lot of time together.

Rodney will always be remembered for his loving and caring spirit. He wanted his family to prosper and made every attempt to make that a reality. Our family and friends say final farewell until we see you again, “we say sleep well, sweetie.” God could not have given us a better caretaker. His memory will live on eternally in our hearts and of those who knew and loved him.

The family of Rodney Craig Simpson wishes to express their gratitude for entrusting final arrangements to John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home and Crematory. We’d also like to thank everyone for the calls, texts, cards, monetary gifts, and prayers.

The family sends a warm thanks to Mark Hughes for going beyond both during Rodney’s illness and now supporting the family as well. He has selflessly proven to be the best neighbor ever. A shout-out to Amy Kirchman, the Bolden family, Willie Porter, Chick, and Rodney’s coworkers.

Friends can visit with the family from 1:00-2:00 PM in the chapel of John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately after the visitation at 2:00 p.m.
