Roger Patterson Ray

Roger Patterson Ray, 78, of Bassett, VA passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 5, 1945, in Martinsville, VA to the late Mallie Benton Ray, Sr. and Mary Lou Patterson Ray. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Lou Sumner, brothers, Jim Ray, and Ben Ray.

Mr. Ray served in the United States Army and received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church and retired from the United States Postal Service in Bassett, VA. Roger had a love for helping others, he was known for his “Santa Heart”.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Jean Horsley Ray; sister, Mary Elizabeth Cannaday; brothers, Don Ray, Bill Ray (Betty Jo), and Wayne Ray (Susan); sister-in-law, Karen Horsley; brother-in-law, Paul Horsley (Jackie). Also surviving is his special great nephew, Matthew Wiggington (Ria), and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, 7 South CCU, for their wonderful care towards Roger.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Fort Trial Baptist Church. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Fort Trial Baptist Church with Pastors Joey McNeil and Tony Beach officiating on Friday, February 16, 2024. Burial will follow the service at Roselawn Burial Park.
