Rogers Renaldo Hagwood

February 23, 1946 - September 30, 2023

Dr. Rogers Renaldo Hagwood, born on February 23, 1946, to Nathaniel Hagwood, Sr and Mable Johnson Hagwood in Switchback, West Virginia. He started working when he was very young; Painting, selling coal, scrap iron, bean poles, flower pots, and blackberries. Upon graduation from Elkhorn High School in 1964, he went to New York where he worked in a warehouse. September 2, 1964, he joined the U.S. Army. He completed Basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. He trained Army Rangers In Fort Lauderdale Florida.He served in South Korea and then was deployed to combat in Vietnam. He was shot and injured in the Vietnam Conflict and was awarded the Military Order of the Purple Heart.After discharge he began working as a Lehr attendant from 1968-69 at Owens in Illinois. Next he transitioned to Chase Manhattan Bank in New York as a bank teller. In 1970, worked in the coal mines, US Steel, and then Eastern Coal Association where he was covered up in a coal mining accident. Then he went to Piqua, Ohio where he worked for Hartzell Propeller plant 1972, and a Creamery in Bloomington, Ohio. He then worked in a Construction Co. When he moved to VA, he worked for Fieldcrest Mills, as a Boiler Operator. Later, he worked for Globmans as a suit salesman and Department Head. Rogers went to work at the Alcohol Treatment Center which later became The Piedmont Regional Center, where he worked as a Counselor, Managed a Halfway House for Recovering Substance abusers, and worked in satellite offices in Patrick And Franklin Counties, in a Supervisory capacity. Simultaneously he operated two businesses: “Muncheeze Doughnut Shop '' and a cleaning service. Roger later worked as a Medical Social Worker for Homehealth at Martinsville Memorial Hospital. Lastly, he worked for Hospice in Wentworth, NC until Retirement. Dr. Hagwood's Education: AA. PHCC, BS Degree in Public Administration and Religion from Ferrum College, MSW from VCU, Doctorate of Divinity from Christian Bible College in Independence Missouri. Many Certificates.As a Christian, Roger became an Ordained Minister in The United Holy Church and served as the YPH President. He also served as an associate minister at Mt Calvary Holy Church.He served as, President of The Ministerial Alliance in Martinsville and Henry Co. Dr. Hagwood became the pastor of First Christian Church and pastored from 1989-2019, where he became moderator for two years of the Christian Disciples Fellowship. Dr. Hagwood taught at Patrick Henry Community College in the following courses: Karate (3rd Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, Japanese Style), Management, Cross Cultural Psychology, Old and New Testament. Dr. Hagwood also taught at National Business College. He recently became a member of St. James Pentecostal Holiness Church, under Pastor Bobby Agnew.Dr. Hagwood had written four books:Roger's Original Poems, Spirituality, God's Word Will Work For You Above All Things!, and God's Eternal Glory!Dr. Hagwood traveled to Israel, West Africa, South Africa, Jamaica, Belize, Barbados, St. Lucius, and Dominica on Mission Trips under Evangelist Gerald Mayhan Ministries.He was preceded in death by, his fraternal grandparents who raised him,the late Daisy, and Nomie Hagwood, his maternal grandparents, Kisby and Genoa Johnson, his parents, Mable and Nathaniel Hagwood, Sr., his sisters Carolyn and Alisha Hagwood and his son, Edward Hagwood, Sr. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 55 years, Sandra Pilson Hagwood, daughter, Michelle (Al) Freeman-Harris of Queensbury, NY; Keisha Walker (George) of Blythewood, SC, Daniele Jones (Dominique) of Martinsville, VA , Samonte' Hodge (David) of Charlotte, NC, brothers, Cecil Johnson (Ruth), Nathaniel Hagwood, Sr., Herbert Hagwood (Drema), Henry Hagwood, Richard Hagwood and one sister, Jeanette Mosley (Jackie); Aunt Stella Vaughn (John) and Aunt Jackie Johnson; nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends.Family viewing on Friday, October 6, 11:00 AM, Wright Funeral Service ChapelFloating visitation on Friday, October 6, 12:00 to 5:00 PM, Wright Funeral Service ChapelVisitation on Saturday, October 7,  11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Assembly Building, Carver RoadFuneral on Saturday, October 7, at 12:00 PM, Assembly Building, Carver RoadBurial on Tuesday, October 10, at 1:00 PM, Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC
