Ronald Houston Harbin

September 14, 1937 - February 9, 2025

Ronald Houston Harbin Sr., 87, of Lynchburg, passed away on February 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community servant, Ron’s life was defined by his dedication to his family, his passion for sports, and his commitment to making a difference in his community.

Born on September 14, 1937, Ron, son of Houston Harbin and Carrie Giles Harbin, was raised on Cotton Hill. He was a lifelong resident of the Lynchburg area and was proud to have served on the boards of the Amherst County Youth Association and Concerned Citizens Opposed to Annexation. He also was very proud to have been an early participant in organizing the Virginia 10-Miler and was a volunteer with the organization for its first 25 years.

An athlete with a love of games and competition, Ron found joy in sports, including baseball, softball, tennis, and bowling. He loved duckpin bowling, once holding the highest average in the City of Lynchburg for a season and was proud to have held the highest three-game set bowled in the city (484) for many years.

Through his job he was pleased to meet people from all walks of life and learned a great deal about crossing barriers to make new friends.

Ron cherished his family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sandy Harbin. He wanted to share that he felt he had three exceptional children. He was the proud father of Ronald "Ronnie" Harbin Jr., Dana Harbin (Michael Taylor), and Dawn (Erik) Stegall. His legacy continues through his grandson, Kevin Taylor, who brought him great pride and joy. He is also survived by his brother, Raymond Harbin, his sister-in-law Janet Crawford Harbin, 4 nieces and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Ron also felt he was blessed to be the step-grandfather of Mary Catherine Campbell and step-great-grandfather of Isabella Campbell.

Ron’s kindness, competitive spirit, and deep sense of community will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his years.
