Rose Mary Stone
Rose Mary Stone, 79, of Bassett, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at her residence. She was born on June 23, 1944, in Virginia to the late Samuel J. Stone and the late Sylvia Q. Stone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by, her brother, Samuel Benton Stone.
Rose Mary graduated from the Old Bassett High School, continuing to Longwood College for her undergraduate studies and Virginia Tech for her master’s degree. Her career in education began at Parkside Middle School in Manassas, Virginia, followed by positions at Fauquier High School in Warrenton, Virginia. Locally, she contributed to Henry County, Virginia, teaching at Fieldale Collinsville High School and Bassett High School, where she concluded her 45-year career with the Alternate Education program at CCL Center for Community Learning, focusing on troubled youth during evening sessions.
Outside of her professional life, Rose Mary found joy in quilting art quilts and wall hangings, sewing, and experimenting with cooking. Her deep love for children, particularly at-risk youth in her community, was evident throughout her life. She also volunteered as a Board member for Marc Workshop in Martinsville, Virginia.
Rose Mary is survived by her niece, Lauren Stone McDermott; her nephew Jerry Norris Stone; God daughter, Rebecca Crowne; her best friend, Christina Oosthoek; and her fur baby, Sammy.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Mount Hemon Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
