Roy Reid Young

March 11, 1948 - December 18, 2024

Roy Reid Young III, 76, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on December 18, 2024. Reid was born on March 11, 1948, in Charlottesville, Virginia, to the late Roy Reid "Jim" Young Jr. and Emily Turner Young.

In addition to his parents, Reid was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lena Davis Young and Roy Reid Young; sister, Jane Young and brother, Kent Young; aunts, Ellen Jane "Toddy" Young Nixon, Marie Davis Young Burpeau and Virginia Young Grogan.

Reid was very proud to be a U.S. Marine. He was an outstanding marksman who served his country as a sniper during the Vietnam War. He received two purple heart medals, among many other medals and commendations for his dedicated service. Following Reid's military service, he joined his father’s law firm, where he quickly gained a reputation for being a fierce defender of those he represented in court. He took great pride in helping fellow veterans with legal matters and representation in court.

An avid outdoorsman, Reid enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, hiking and biking during his downtime.

Reid is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sharon "Gail" Young; his children, Catherine Young Avon and Roy Reid "Little Reid" Young IV (Mother, Amy Brooks Hall); three granddaughters, Ella Blair Young, Mia Grace Kirby, Kate Avon and one grandson, Will Avon; aunt, Kerrington Young Tillery, as well as his cousins, Charles Nixon, Deborah Tilford, Michele Young Burpeau, George O. Burpeau, Kemp Burpeau, Lynne Bozeman, Anne Grogan Wheeler, Ray Wilson "Will" Tillery, and Kerrington Tillery Parker.

A celebration of life service for Reid will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at McKee-Stone Funeral Home, 109 Broad Street, Martinsville, Virginia.
