Ruby Marie Lumpkins
Ruby “Marie” Lumpkins, aged 77, of Danville, VA died peacefully surrounded by her loving husband, and close friend, Larry Wilson on 24 April 2025 at her home in Danville, VA after a courageous battle with ALS.
Marie was born on December 14,1947 in Draper (now Eden), NC to Velva Hammock Lumpkins and Junior Columbus Lumpkins, both now deceased.
Marie is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Nathan Lumpkins; sister Reba Enriquez and spouse Martin from Greensboro, NC; sister Fran L. Peters from Eden, NC; a special Aunt – Dorothy Cannon of Eden, NC; and Aunt and Uncle – Louise and Earl Hammock from Eden, NC. Additionally, Marie is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
Marie attended John Motley Morehead High School in Eden, NC graduating in 1966. She continued her education first at Rockingham Community College, Wentworth, NC and ultimately graduated from University of NC Greensboro. She then worked for several years at Groveton High School in Fairfax County in the Special Education Department. In the late 1980s, Marie moved from Fairfax to Danville where she was a Special Education Math and English teacher at George Washington High School. Marie was Chairperson of the Special Education Department at George Washington High School. For many years she was President of the Danville Education Association. She was a strong advocate for her colleagues, students and parents. Her students found her to be a kind and loving teacher. Marie retired from her position after a rewarding educational career.
After retirement, Marie enjoyed teaching at Sacred Heart School for an additional two years. She taught from 2011-2013 at Sacred Heart School.
In addition to her passion for education, Marie had an abiding love for watching birds and working with her flowers. She also spent many happy hours conducting genealogy research, spending time with friends, and attending estate sales. Despite her busy schedule, Marie found time to share her love of cross-stich and crochet with others.
The family would like to thank Debrah Slayton, Debbie McGregor, Vanessa Riddle and all of her other close friends who routinely came and shared their time with Marie. A very special thank you to Rasheen Toppen, whose loving care and support will always be remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to the ALS Foundation.
At Marie’s request, there will be no formal funeral services.
