Rudolph J. Scaggs

September 27, 1929 - June 22, 2024

Rudolph J. Scaggs, 94, of Troutville passed away on June 22, 2024 at his residence.

A native of Virginia he was the husband of Iva Lillian Scaggs, who survives, and the son of Grace and Oakley Scaggs, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Zeke and Freddie Scaggs; and sisters, Joyce Crawford and Connie Scaggs. After graduating from Troutville High School in 1947, Rhudy completed college course work in quality control and contract administration, including classes at Roanoke College, University of Wisconsin, University of Maryland and 39 military courses.

Rhudy served in the United States Navy during the Korean War starting in 1948. He served predominantly at sea on multiple ships, at times on the same ship as this brother Freddie. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

After leaving the Navy in 1952, Rhudy had a 40 year career in quality control and contract administration, mostly as part of the federal government.  He work as an Explosive Inspector and Supervisor for the Department of the Army at the Hercules Powder Company plant in Radford, Virginia from 1952 until 1967.  He worked for the Department of Defense in its night vision program from 1967 until 1987 as a Quality Assurance Specialist and Manager in Roanoke and Woodbridge, Virginia, retiring from federal employment as the Program Quality Manager for Night Vision.  He then moved on to work for Litton Industries in Phoenix, Arizona as its Quality Assurance Manager from 1987 until 1994.

Rhudy was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church in Daleville. He enjoyed hiking, yard work, wood working, drawing, and painting. He continued to climb Peaks of Otter well into his 80s and mowed and maintained his yard into his 90s.  He loved traveling with Iva, friends and family, visiting Europe, Australia, Asia and Alaska multiple times.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his beloved wife Iva, those left to cherish his memory are his children, R.J. Scaggs, Jr. and his spouse Colette Scaggs and Kay Spencer and her spouse Brian Spencer; grandchildren, Ben Spencer, Alexandra Scaggs, Melissa Hynes, Kristina Nichols and AnMarie Decker and their spouses; twelve great grandchildren ranging in age from 11 years to 4 months; and sisters, Carol Faye Waddell and Marlies Brantley.

The family will receive friends at Troutville Church of the Brethren on Friday, June 28, 2024 from 2:00 until 3:00 pm. A funeral service will follow at the church at 3:00 pm with Pastor Terry Johnson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Troutville Cemetery.
