Russell proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After his service, he retired from the Lynchburg Foundry, where he was an active member of the Union. A lover of the outdoors and an active lifestyle, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son and grandson, gardening, and working in his yard. Russell never met a stranger and had a gift for connecting with people. He was known for his generous spirit and genuine love for others.

One of Russell’s favorite pastimes was vacationing at the beach, where he could often be found on the pier fishing for hours. He delighted in striking up conversations with fellow anglers and sharing stories. Church was also an integral part of his life. He was a past member of the Common Ground Cowboy Church in Amherst and a devoted member of Christ Community Church, where he served as one of the church deacons.

Russell is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Williams Coleman; his son, Russell V. Coleman, III; his daughter, Ellen C. Owens; and two grandchildren, Jen R. Coleman and Joseph W. Coates; three sisters, Mildred Hammock, Cathleen Stewart and Betty Hudgins (Mike); three brothers, William Coleman, Sr. (Virginia), Leonard Coleman and Robert Coleman (Patti), and a number of nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

One sister, Mary Frances Bryant and one brother, John Owen Coleman preceded him in death.

A service celebrating his life and faith will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2025 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Dan Yerdon and the Rev. Glenn Shelton officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 16.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be private at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Russell’s love for life, people, and his faith will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family would like to thank so many friends for the love and support they had shown during Russell’s illness.
