Samuel Mason
Samuel Eugene “Gene” Mason, age 86, of 405 Heatherton Drive, Covington, Virginia died Sunday, December 24, 2023 at LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany in Low Moor.
Gene was born October 22, 1937 in Clifton Forge, Virginia to the late Edward Elijah and Annie Pauline Fury Mason. He was a 1957 graduate of Clifton Forge High School, a 1961 graduate of Zion Bible Institute, and a 1989 graduate of Delaware State College with a B.S. in Elementary Education. He was a computer technician for International Playtex of Dover, Delaware for over 20 years. Gene had many loves. His first love was Jesus Christ, whom he made his Savior in 1957 and served God faithfully for 66 years. His second love was his wife, Alice, to whom he was married to for 62 years. His third love, The United States Air Force. He loved his country and was most proud of his military service for which he served 23 years of active and reserve duty. He retired in October of 1997. His fourth love was hunting (especially with his dad) and fishing, and of course anything to do with airplanes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stillborn son, Samuel E. Mason, Jr. born June 14, 1968, and his brothers, Edward Lewis Mason, Robert Joseph Mason, and Melvin Wayne Mason.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Furry Mason of Valley Ridge, Covington; sisters-in-law, Carol Mason, Sylvia Mason, and Maye Furry Vess and husband, Tommy, who were special friends to Gene; many nieces and nephews; a special childhood, Richard Nicely.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Pastor Teddy Bias officiating. Interment will follow in Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Full military rites will be provided at the graveside by members of the United States Air Force. The family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.
