Shelba Potter English
Shelba Potter English, age 86, of Glade Hill, VA, departed this earthly life July 26, 2023 at Berkshire Health and Rehabilitation. She was the daughter of Ben and Dora Potter of Penhook, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Bobby Potter, and sister, Pat Malpass and husband Garland Page English.
She was a graduate of Franklin County High School in 1955. Following graduation she started her career at DuPont in Martinsville, VA. In 1964, she married Page English and began her family. She supported her husband on his family farm by raising tobacco and raising two girls. Shelba was known for habitually mowing her lawn and maintaining a clean home.
She went back to work at Arrington Flowers and Gifts and will be remembered for her bows, helping couples with their weddings, families with their funerals, and holiday corsages. She finished working with Flowers by Jones and enjoyed being a part of the community. Her work ethic was fast paced, and she was there to serve others. She joined the Snow Creek Ladies Auxiliary in 1984 and received several awards for her efforts.
She was a woman of many talents, sewing, crocheting, arranging flowers, gardening, and cooking. She hosted many meals for traveling ministers and potlucks at church. She has several recipes in the local cookbooks. She would often get a call from her brother-in-law for help with cooking.
She loved the Lord and attended Forrest Hill Church on Sunday mornings, evenings, and Wednesday nights for choir practice. She spent a great deal of time with her church family and supported new ministers when they arrived.
Shelba enjoyed watching UVA Cavaliers Basketball and was thrilled when they won their first national championship.
She is survived by her children, Shay and Jeff Brill, Gina and KC Miller, and her precious grandchildren Shelby Kathleen and Page Bradley Miller, devoted nieces Bonnie Belcher, Betty and David Hodges, Vickie Prillaman, Sherri Malpass, Julie Ellington, and Brenda Potter, nephew, David and Susan Potter, and her brother-in-law, Al Malpass.
Services will be at Forrest Hill Christian Church Saturday, July 29th at 10am for the family to receive guests and the funeral will begin at 11am. A meal will be provided afterward the graveside service at the church.
