Shelby Dean Badgett Nichols
Mrs. Shelby Dean Badgett Nichols, 86, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday night, December 17, 2023, at Homestead Hills Assisted Living in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Nichols was born October 5, 1937, in Surry County, the older of two children born to the late Howard Glen and Annie Taylor Badgett. Shelby grew up in the White Plains community and graduated from White Plains High School in 1954. On March 13, 1955, Shelby married Roger Lewis Nichols, and for 63 years they were a vital part of the White Plains community. She dedicated her life to the creation of a loving home for her family, and she spent many years as her husband’s business partner and bookkeeper in the tobacco warehouse business. Shelby used music as her ministry, providing lovely music for weddings, funerals, worship services, and other special events. Mrs. Nichols was a faithful member of Mount Airy Friends Meeting. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Timothy M. Nichols of Winston-Salem, James A. and Jill H. Nichols of Mount Airy, and Samuel J. and Tina S. Nichols of Mount Airy; her grandchildren, Matthew and Megan Simpson, Andrew Simpson, Jessy Nichols, Jake Nichols, Morgan and Jarod Wilson, Alexandra and Austin Crissman, and Emma and Austin Jarrell; her great-grandchildren, Rosie Simpson, Wylder Simpson, Hance Wilson, Lainey Wilson, and Mason Crissman; and a brother and sister-in-law, Larry W. and Peggy M. Badgett. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Lewis Nichols; and her son, Gary Lewis Nichols. A service of worship and celebration of Shelby’s life will be held Friday, December 22, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Mount Airy Friends Meeting, with Dr. Jon Cawley officiating. Burial will follow in the White Plains Friends Meeting Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 until 11:00 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Airy Friends Meeting, 109 West Wilson Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
