Shelby Jean Stokes

December 12, 1954 - February 12, 2024

Shelby Jean Stokes, 69, of Roanoke, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 12, 2024. Born in Roanoke, Va., on Sunday, December 12, 1954, to the late John Harold and Melba Tuell Stokes, she is also preceded in death by her brothers, Ricky Stokes, and Butch and Randy Canaday.

Shelby, a graduate of Virginia Tech, remained an enthusiastic Hokie fan throughout her life. She loved time spent with family and friends. Traditionally, Christmas Eve was spent in Shelby’s home around a table full of laughter and delicious food. She adored Toby Keith and his music so much that she named her much loved dog, Toby, in his honor. Shelby had quite the wit and personality and was funny even when she wasn’t intending to be. Her catch phrase, “How wow!”, while you can’t really define it, is now forever in our family dialog. “Can’t find my sock” can still get everyone in the room laughing and has become a favorite and cherished memory. Shelby was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Shelby is survived by her nieces, Hope Lupton and her husband, Tracy and Marie Clark and her husband, Steve; great nieces and nephews, Taylor Clark, Hailey Clark, Kasey Clark and her boyfriend, Roger Flood, as well as the one she lovingly referred to as “the child” Wilson; Aunt Sue and Uncle Glenn; close friends, Debbie and Cathy; and her loving church family at Salem Church of Christ.

The family will welcome friends on Thursday, February 15, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home. Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Taylor Plott officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.

The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to the staff and Danielle Genovese Biggs of Gentiva Health Services for the compassion care and loving kindness shown to both Shelby and their family during this time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Salem Church of Christ, 401 West Main Street, Salem, Va. 24153.
