Shirley Day

October 16, 1941 - February 14, 2025

Shirley Day of New Castle, VA passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, surrounded by her loving daughters. It is fitting that Shirley was called home on this special day, Valentine’s Day, as she was reunited in heaven with her beloved husband of 53 years, Alfred Day. Together, they shared a wonderful life, filled with love and adventure. Shirley and Al loved traveling out west and looked forward to their biannual trips to the Outer Banks, where they cherished time spent with their Ocean Waves family.

Shirley was born on October 16, 1941. She was preceded in death by parents, Oliver Jackson Slaydon and Annie Beatrice Slaydon; devoted husband, Alfred F. Day; brothers Jimmy Slaydon, Clifford Slaydon, Allen Slaydon, and sister Eleanor Garlick.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters Jeanette Day Warwick (Curt) and Elizabeth Day; granddaughter Morgan Dowdy (Jayke); her “little pumpkin,” great-granddaughter Adelyn Dowdy; and many family and friends who brought her much joy. Shirley's family was the center of her heart, and her devotion to them was steadfast and unwavering.

Known for her generous heart, Shirley was a woman who always put others before herself. Her kindness and loving nature knew no bounds, and to know her was to love her. She was a faithful servant of God and a beloved friend to many. Shirley had a way of making everyone feel welcomed and special, never meeting a stranger. She dedicated her life to loving and caring for those around her, always striving to make others feel valued and cherished.

While our hearts are heavy with her passing, we take comfort in knowing that Shirley is now in the presence of her Heavenly Father, rejoicing and smiling down on us. In her own words: “We love each other, we take care of each other, and we have fun.” Her legacy of love, kindness, and faith will continue to inspire and guide us all.

The family will receive friends at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 from 1:00 until 2:00 pm. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Lotz Funeral Home in Salem with Rev. Ruthie Arthurs officiating. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Good Samaritan Hospice for their unwavering support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Good Samaritan Hospice in Shirley’s memory.

Shirley Day’s loving spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her, and though she will be greatly missed, we find peace in knowing she is in the arms of her Savior, reunited with those she loved.
