Shirley "Gene" Underwood

Shirley “Gene” Underwood, 87, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2022.

Gene was born in Raphine, West Virginia on November 30, 1934. He was the husband of the late Judy Underwood and the son of Jesse David Underwood and Lola A Underwood, both deceased. Gene served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed watching the Redskins, watching NASCAR, and fishing. He worked for 29 years at Fred Whitaker and 7 years at Elizabeth Arden.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his son, Richard Underwood; his brother, Bobby Underwood; and sisters, Geneva Spade and her husband George and Lois Smith and her husband Richard.

Those left to cherish his memory are two sons, Bryan Underwood and Donnie Underwood and wife Susan; his daughter, Tamara Underwood; three grandchildren, Lauren Underwood, Kallie Underwood, and Chris Mathis; seven great grandchildren; four sisters, Nancy Sanders, Brenda “Sue” McKay, Karen Hylton, and Rita Cunningham; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 from 2:00 until 3:00 pm. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 pm in the chapel with military honors.
