Shirley Jean Crawford Hughes Coffey

June 10, 1942 - January 11, 2025

As she wished, Shirley Coffey passed from this life at home surrounded by her family. She suffered with a debilitating lung disease, and it was a heartbreaking journey for her and her loved ones.

She is pre-deceased by her parents, Lamah and Allie Pearl Crawford; sisters, Naomi Williams and Elizabeth Stover; brother, Leo Crawford; son, Kevin Hughes; daughter, Kathy Booth; granddaughter, Miranda Stebar; and great-grandson, Zachary Tickle.

Shirley was born and raised in Craig County, Virginia, where she grew up on her parents’ dairy farm. Standing on a stool as a young girl, she began learning her legendary cooking skills alongside her mama. The kitchen was her sanctuary. She loved nothing more than to feed people, especially her family. Her family was her world. Shirley did not just do meals - holidays were extravaganzas. Grandkids were presented with her prized Butterfinger cake on birthdays. Shirley also loved to garden. Her flower plantings were the highlight of her neighborhood. After working several decades as an inspector at ITT, she retired in 2009. She and Philip enjoyed frequent RV trips with their beloved dog Annie (her little angel). She also enjoyed many long weekend trips with her daughters which involved good food, many cocktails, lots of laughter and playing Mexican train.

Left to cherish her memory are devoted husband, Philip Coffey; daughters, Susan Ellis, Lori and husband, Harless Ratcliffe, Jr.; stepchildren, Greg Coffey and wife, Joan, Chris Coffey and wife, Meaco, and Lisa Rountree and husband, Jeff; grandsons, Justin Ellis, Joshua Pennington and wife, Leigh, Ryan Ellis, and Sean Ellis; granddaughters, Ashley Santoemma and husband, Dave, Kayla Divers and husband, Eric, and Brianna Wheeling; great grandchildren, Corbin, Marshall and Lane Pennington, Ryleigh Gilmore, and Kamden, Cole and Emmalee Conner.

The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for their care the last month of her life.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, in Salem. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel, on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Pastor Lee Sarver will officiate.
