Shirley Jean Davis Farmer

September 5, 1936 - June 7, 2024

Shirley Jean Davis Farmer, age 87 of Rocky Mount, Virginia, passed away on June 7, 2024. Born on September 5, 1936, Shirley was ahead of her time, a remarkable individual with a love of learning and the arts.

Taking on opportunities available to her at the time, Shirley’s career was marked by dedication and versatility. Her professional contributions reflected her commitment to always trying new things. With a secretarial degree from Radford University, she graced the halls of a local bank with her expertise, lent her skills to the Juvenile Court, volunteered for various organizations including the Candy Stripers, and played a crucial role in managing Gil Farmer Chevrolet.

Her talents extended far beyond the office. In addition to playing a mean hand of bridge, Shirley enjoyed playing tennis and golf, demonstrating skill and passion in all pursuits. There are many funny stories of her adventures competing with friends; “H’Wiggins” invitational for those of you who remember.

Her creative spirit knew no bounds. As an artist, she breathed life into Santas and Angels sculpted from ‘cloth mâché’, sewed (pillows, curtains and even toddler jumpers when we couldn’t find one with dinosaurs), and engaged in countless other artistic pursuits.

Antiquing was another of Shirley's passions, and she delighted in scouring antique shops with friends and family, amassing collections of dishes that graced the tables during her delicious meals; there was never a recipe she wasn’t willing to try. Spiced beef tenderloin comes to mind. Her enthusiasm for discovery didn't stop there; as an avid reader, she had an insatiable curiosity about all things scientific. Shirley was a scientist at heart, always eager to learn more about the mysteries of life on earth and the universe.

Despite her many interests, Shirley’s greatest joy was her family. She was deeply involved in the lives of her grandchildren, championing their education and always supporting their endeavors. She provided unwavering love and care, ensuring her grandchildren always felt cherished.

A true beauty, both inside and out, Shirley will be remembered for her unique spirit, her myriad talents, and her devotion to her family. Her life was a blend of creativity, curiosity, and care. As we mourn her passing, we honor her legacy and the many ways she enriched the lives of those around her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Gilbert Farmer. She is survived by her sister, Betty Davis Turner (husband Lewis); two children, Terry Farmer Fralin (friend Steve) and John Parks Farmer (wife Sophia); grandchildren Timothy Scott Fralin (wife Mallory), Kristin Nicole Shively (husband Dwyane), Zachary Davis Farmer, Zoe Katherine Farmer, Alexander Zane Farmer; 5 great grandchildren; her wonderful nieces and nephews and the rest of her family and friends.
