Shirley J. Miller

November 17, 1940 - May 30, 2024

Shirley Jean Miller, 83, of Salem, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 30, 2024. She was born on November 17, 1940 in Layland, WV to the late Howard and Helen Hall. After high school, Shirley worked for the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. where she met the love of her life, James “Jim” Miller. In 1972, they moved to Salem where they enjoyed sharing their beautiful home with their family and friends. Shirley often invited her nieces and nephews to stay in the summer and all of her family, friends, and neighbors were welcomed to her wonderful pool parties and cookouts.

Shirley loved everyone she knew and made new friends wherever she went. She enjoyed Elvis’s music, collecting his memorabilia, gardening, and finding deals at yard sales and her favorite stores. In the mid-1980’s, Shirley began organizing the Kosnoski Family Reunion in Layland, WV and the Layland Community Reunion at Camp Washington-Carver, both held each summer until Covid. She was also a dedicated employee for Dr. Womack, the Salem YWCA, and the Atlantic Company evening janitorial service for over 30 years.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Miller, with whom she was happily married for 55 years. Family left to cherish her memory include her son, Douglas Miller; brother, Gary Hall and his wife, Greta; sister, Janet Bragg; sister, Sandy Levitt; numerous nieces and nephews; Piper, the cat; Ginger, the dog; and special daughter, Mollie Garrett and her husband, Fred; and special grandchildren, Stephen and Kate Garrett.

Graveside Services will be held at 3 pm on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem with the Rev. Randel Harris officiating. Friends will be welcomed to visit 30 minutes prior to the service.
