Somboun Chanthavongsa

Somboun Chanthavongsa, 75, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on December 3, 2025, surrounded by his spouse and children by his side.

Somboun was born on September 5, 1950, in Muang Khong, Laos, to Jahegg Eeh and Khamphang Chanthavongsa.

After finishing his education, Somboun joined the Lao military in 1968, serving alongside U.S. forces during the Vietnam War. He went on to become a math teacher before immigrating to the United States with his family in 1989. He enjoyed annual fishing trips with his family and grandchildren at Lake Noman, loved both beach and mountain getaways, and was always kidding around with his grandchildren. His moments with his loved one were always filled with patience, humor, and love.

Somboun was preceded in death by his former wife, Khamkai; his father, Jahegg Eeh; and his mother, Khamphang.

He is survived by his wife, Urai; his children— Khammoune (Pai), Bounsouane Sayer (David), Nouthine Sublett (John), Thongsoun Chanthavongsa (Arissara), Pranee Smarsh (Derek), and Sunny Chanthavongsa; his grandchildren—Brandon Sisoukraj, Nathan Sayer, David and Justin Sublett, Brianna Malus, Tinaphat and Pooriphat Chanthavongsa, and Mia and Kai Smarsh; as well as his brothers, Tongdumn, Khamsing, and Pwongpet Chanthavongsa.

Somboun was a beloved husband, a steady and supportive father, and a devoted, doting grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Service will be held at Simpson Funeral Home on December 7, 2025 at 11:30 AM.
