Sylvia Mary Schuur
Sylvia Mary Schuur, age 77, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday January 19, 2024 after a long battle with dementia. Mary was loved by many for her great smile and spunky personality. Mary loved to take walks on her property in Callaway Virginia, often stopping by the creek to sit and contemplate life. She loved to read and share articles of interest with family and friends. Mary had a "green thumb", growing many vegetables, fruits on the tree/bush/ground and flowers. You could look out the bay window in front of her house and see the garden, flowers and trees. She was a great gardener, growing zucchinis the size of a forearm. Mary loved watermelon, strawberries and coffee. Mary was creative and often made her own decor for her home. She loved photography and often took all the pictures at parties, on vacations and during family events.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Zula Gay McAlexander Agnew and William Dexter Agnew; her sisters, Lorraine and Ruth; and her brothers, Radolf and Elbert Agnew, Curtis Agnew. Mary was immensely loved by her husband of 45 years Robert D. Schuur Jr. who often referred to her as the love of his life. The happy couple got married in Las Vegas, enjoyed traveling together and continued to travel throughout their marriage. Mary loved to travel by herself, visiting family and seeing her grandchildren. Her independent and adventurous spirit sent her to explore many places in her life. She often went on many adventures with her best friend Joan Bartal. As a kid the family went camping at KOA and Good Sams camps and I, her daughter, enjoyed trips alone with her to meet up with family.
Mary is survived by one daughter, Sherry Haas and husband Frederick Jr. from Savannah GA; one step-daughter, Sherry Carpenter and husband Scott from Phoenix, AZ; one step-son, Robert Schuur III and wife Andrea from Syracuse, NY; seven grandchildren, Blair Dscala from Amsterdam, Frederick Haas III from GA, Brittany, Zack and Ashlyn Carpenter (AZ), Robert IV and Brianna Schuur (NY); one brother and his wife, William and Rhonda Agnew from VA; one sister, Ethel Harris from VA; several nieces and nephews, Christopher Agnew (VA) and family, Sharon Harris (VA), Yvonne and Ron Pechanek (VA), Stephen Bartal; two step-granddaughters, Heather Rees and family and Tiffany Ledbetter and family; and two great-grandchildren, Madeleine and Cameron Discala from Amsterdam.
Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel, 2:00 PM Monday, January 22, 2024. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center Rocky Mount Virginia. Mary was well loved!
