Thelma Collins Smith
Thelma Collins Smith, 83, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025, in Appling, Georgia. She was born on March 30, 1941, in Durbin, West Virginia, to the late Jess Collins and Madeline Cosner Collins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Smith, and two brothers, Jesse Collins and Howard Collins.
Thelma dedicated over 25 years of service to DuPont before retiring. She was a faithful member of Fort Trial Baptist Church. A talented seamstress and baker, she also had a creative spirit and loved crafting. She enjoyed volunteering at the Farmer’s Market every Saturday and Wednesday and had a deep passion for traveling. She was always active, constantly seeking new things to do. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who held a special place in her heart.
Thelma is survived by her daughter, Rita Shelton (Robert); her son, Stephen Smith; four grandchildren, Madeline Smith, Parker Smith, Emily Shelton, and Nicholas Shelton; and one great-grandchild, Waylon Morris. She also leaves behind her brother, Arthur Collins (Karen); three sisters, Fay Moore, Joan Lantz, and Ruth Davis (Fraser); along with a host of extended family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 1:00pm at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Joey McNeil officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
