Thomas Calvin Matthews
Thomas Calvin Matthews II died peacefully at home on January 8, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean Ross Matthews; his three children, John (Michelle) Matthews, Elizabeth (Denver) Jent, and Ross (Toni) Matthews; five grandchildren, Erin (Matt) Masters, Tommy Matthews, Hannah Jent, Lindsey (Zach) Promitas, and Lukas Matthews; and two great-grandchildren, Gentry Cooper and Nora Promitas.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Hill Matthews II and Nyra Saunders Matthews; and his three siblings, Sue Davis, Louetta Ingram, and John Hill (Johnny) Matthews III.
Tom was the caregiver of his beloved brother, Johnny, for 25 years.
Tom was a lifelong resident of Martinsville and Henry County. He worked for Stanley W. Bowles Corporation and Henry County PSA. He was also the Harvest Foundation's representative assigned to the supervision of the construction of the Smith River Sports Complex.
He was an avid outdoorsman who shared his love of hiking, camping, and canoeing with his family.
Tom was a devoted Scout Leader of Troup 264 and received one of the Scout's highest awards, The Silver Beaver.
He loved reading and genealogy. he was an amazing storyteller and loved sharing his life's adventures with those around him.
Services for Thomas will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at Norris Funeral Services - Martinsville. The burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Bassett Historical Center, 3964 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett, VA, 24055, in Thomas's honor.
