Thomas "Tommy" William McCroskey
Thomas William McCroskey “Tommy”, 74 of Blacksburg, Virginia departed this life January 5, 2023 in the care of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born in Giles County on December 9, 1948, Tommy was a son of the late Morell “Fuzzy” McCroskey and Clara Beckner McCroskey.
Tommy was a servant, first serving his country in the United States Army as a Specialist 5 during the Vietnam War. Tommy would then work for the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and for Maynard White at his garage in downtown Rich Creek, where the National Bank building now sits. Tommy then started a career, serving his community with the Virginia Department of Corrections in 1980 at Bland Correctional Center as a Corrections Officer. In 1990, he transferred to Keen Mountain Correctional Center in Oakwood, VA to promote from Corrections Officer to Corrections Sergeant and then Corrections Lieutenant before transferring to Pulaski Correctional Unit 1 in Dublin, VA in 1998 to serve as Lieutenant, where he remained until his retirement in 2005. In addition to a life filled with service, Tommy enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding motorcycles.
In addition to his parents, Tommy is preceded in death by a brother, Morell Lee McCroskey.
Left to cherish his memory to their hearts are his wife and high school sweetheart, Bonita Smith McCroskey; son, Jason William McCroskey of Narrows, VA; stepchildren, Willard Grubb of Pearisburg, Jason Mitcham (Brittany) of Montgomery County, Angela Morse (Bud) of Madison, Virginia; and Bobbie Jo Griggs (Steve) of Pembroke; brother, Franklin McCroskey (Claire) of Pearisburg, VA; and sister, Judy Page (John) of Pearisburg; and several nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service conducted on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 7:00 PM in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. The family will receive friends in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, January 13, 2022 from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
