Tommy Jay Doss
Tommy Jay Doss, age 55, went home to be with the Lord he loved on Sunday, May 05, 2024, after a two-and-a-half-year long battle with glioblastoma. He was the son of the late William Garfield Doss Sr. and late Janice Reynolds Doss. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cheryl Wilson Doss. He leaves behind his three girls who were the center of his life: Sarah Kate Doss and husband Caleb Luis Turner; Taylor Marie Doss, and Sophia Janice Doss. Tommy leaves a dearly beloved brother William Garfield Doss Jr. (Billy) and his wife Kimberly Doss and their children Lauren Nicole Doss and William Mathew Doss of Dry Fork, VA., and a dearly beloved sister Scarlett Doss Murray and her daughter, Katelyn Elizabeth Murray of Dry Fork, VA. He leaves numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins that he grew up with and loved dearly. Tommy also leaves his church family whom he loved, at County Line Christian Church and many friends who shared his love of movies and playing video games.
Tommy graduated from G.W. high school class of 1986 where he was in marching band. He graduated from Virginia Tech class of 1990 with a BS in History and Political Science where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. Finally, he finished his academic career at Virginia Tech class of 2002 with a Master of Public Administration. Tommy served his community on the Danville police force for seven years before leaving and serving on the Lynchburg police force for an additional seven years. Tommy left the Police Department and went to work for the Lynchburg Fire Department as an IT specialist. This turned into a job with the City of Lynchburg’s IT Department where he recently retired after 18 and a half years of service.
Tommy had a unique ability to connect with other people through storytelling, and an extraordinary memory of things he had learned and those he met in life. Tommy was an amateur comedian with some of the best lighthearted jokes and pranks. Tommy was an avid reader. He enjoyed reading and listening to audio books on his drives back and forth from Danville to Lynchburg over the years. Tommy enjoyed traveling near and far with his family his most favorite place being Ireland. Most of all Tommy loved watching Syfy movies of which his favorites were Star Trek and Star Wars. To quote Leonard McCoy “He’s really not dead, as long as we remember him.” He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, a loyal friend, and the best, most perfect girl dad in the world. A void is definitely felt, and he will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Friday May 10, 2024, at Norris Funeral Home on Franklin Tpke. and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday May 11, 2024, at Norris Funeral Home on Franklin Tpke. Interment will follow at Highland burial park.
