Troy Edwin Crowder

March 23, 1934 - May 19, 2023

Troy Edwin Crowder of Danville, Virginia, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Friday, May 19,

2023. Born March 23, 1934, in Galax, Virginia, he was the son of the late William and Alice

Smythers Crowder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of

seventy years, Ida Hutcherson Crowder; sisters, Ilene Alley, and Esther Lineberry; and brothers,

Junior Crowder and Luther Crowder.

Raised on a farm, Troy learned the value of hard work at an early age. A lesson that served him

well throughout his life. He worked for Continental Can Company as a truck driver for thirty-seven years,

and always had various side jobs in the works. He believed everyone had a God

given talent they could tap into, and his was the innate ability to repair or build just about

anything. Back in the day, he was the handy man of the neighborhood and was the person to call

for any home improvement needs.

Troy was a former member and deacon of Chatmoss Baptist Church in Martinsville. He spoke

fondly of the lifelong friendships he made there and reminisced about church building projects,

special dinners, and the get-togethers they all enjoyed. He was a man of strong faith, a believer

in Christ and in prayer.

He loved his family and adored his wife, Ida. Throughout the years, they worked on many home

building projects together and loved seeing a design they had drawn on paper, come to life.

Troy and Ida enjoyed every day together, whether they were working in the yard, taking an

afternoon drive or relaxing on their front porch. They were best friends and soulmates and are

now together again.

Mr. Crowder is survived by daughters, Debra C. Ray of Wilmington, NC; Sherri C. Duarte (Bill)

of Martinsville, VA; grandson, Matt Ray (Ben) of Chapel Hill, NC; sister, Audene Phillips of

Galax, VA; sister-in-law and life-long friend, Sinia Hutcherson of Martinsville; and several

nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to our cousin, Glenda Hutcherson Tyree, our friend Mildred France, and neighbors

Paul and Tonya Hodges and family for their endless acts of kindness during our time of need.

Visitation will be held at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville, Tuesday, May 30, 2023, from noon to 1:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life to follow with Pastor Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Burial will take place at nearby Roselawn Burial Park.
