Vergie Mcalexander Rakes

February 16, 1944 - October 14, 2024

Vergie Vaughn Rakes, 80, of Fieldale, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 14, 2024. She was born February 16, 1944 to the late Arthur Keith and Florence Griffith McAlexander. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Gerald F. Vaughn, brother, Charlie A. McAlexander (Ruby), and sisters, Norma Jean McConnell and Ruth Ella Riffe. She was blessed with a “bonus” family in 2010 after marrying her second husband, Harold D. Rakes, now deceased, as is his son Samuel “Sam” Rakes (Leslie). Remaining to cherish Vergie’s memory are her daughters, Vickie Vaughn Beasley (Jeff) and Jennifer Vaughn Caldwell; step-daughter, Tami Rakes Turner (Jerry) and beloved granddaughter’s Holly Beasley and Chloe Caldwell. She was especially smitten with her adorable “grandpup”, Emory Jane. Vergie was an incredibly talented artist and started a part-time ceramic business while raising her children. She meticulously handcrafted each piece effortlessly creating masterpieces with the stroke of a brush. As a member of Hill Memorial Baptist Church for over 50 years, many lifetime friends were made and teaching Sunday School gave her a sense of purpose. Before declining health took hold, you would often find Vergie working in her meticulously kept yard for hours on end. At Christmas, the decorations that adorned her home filled passersby’s eyes with wonder as did the beautiful tapestry of flowers that flourished under her diligent care. Although heartbroken, our family is overjoyed that our precious loved one is rejoicing with her Lord and Savior. As we come together to honor her life, we invite you to join us during her visitation on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and at the funeral service on Friday, October 18 at 1:00 pm. All services will be held at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Hwy, Bassett, Virginia. Burial will follow in the County Line Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery, 2900 County Line Road, Patrick Springs, VA.Online condolences at www.collinsmckeestonebassett.com
