Vernon Franklin Houchin

Vernon Franklin Houchin, 82, of Salem VA, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2025. Vern was born in Fredericksburg, VA on May 12, 1941. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Vernon Houchin and Cora Lee; stepfather, J. Max Scott; and granddaughter, Lindsay Houchin. Vern was married to Judy for 62 years. She was the love of his life. Vern’s greatest accomplishments were his three children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, whom he loved and supported everything they did. He also loved his sports teams: Salem Spartans, Virginia Tech, Washington Redskins, and NASCAR.

Vern served 25 years in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He also served 14 years as a deputy sheriff for the City of Salem.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Houchin; sons, Virgil Houchin and wife Tammy, and Robert Houchin and wife Teresa; daughter, Jennifer Muncy and husband Aaron; grandchildren, Zach Houchin, Brandi Houchin, Jacob Muncy, and Jeremy Muncy; great grandchildren, Alice and Damien; sister, Frances Seay and husband Bobby; and best furry friend, Ladybug.

A Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 1 pm to 3 pm at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Rd. Roanoke, VA 24019.
