Virginia Bernice Woods

Virginia Bernice Craig Woods of Sunset Drive, Bassett, Va., transitioned from this earthly life to her heavenly home on April 10, 2026, at the age of 82. She was born on September 18, 1943, to the late Mary (Geneva) Craig Akridge.

She was united in marriage to George M. Woods on September 29, 1962, with whom she shared 63 years of wedded bliss.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her son, Gary Vincent Woods; her stepfather Joseph Akridge; one brother Jimmie Akridge, and three sisters: Barbie Diane Taylor, Mary Jo Craig Robinson and Patsy Akridge.

She worked for Bassett Walker Knitting Co. for 25 years, where her hard and faithful service made her a valuable employee.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 63 years, George M. Woods; adopted daughter Sabina Akridge King, two granddaughters, Alexis Woods, Leslie Simmons both of Charlotte, NC; one grandson Jason Woods of Charlotte, NC; three great-grandsons: Kingston Jeremiah Woods, Javaris Antonie Cannon, and Jaleel Kyrie Cannon; one great-granddaughter Lilah Jene Jones; daughter-in-law Shelia Woods of Charlotte, NC; two brothers Joey Akridge (Teresa) and Reginald Thomas; her faithful nurse and friend Audrena Brim; two special friends, Christine Gilbert Manns and Haley Hairston and a host of nieces and nephews and family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel on Monday, April 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM, with visitation one half-hour prior to the service. Evangelist Tomeka Robinson will be presiding. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens. There will be a floating visitation on Friday, April 17, from 10:00 until 4:00.
