Virginia Grille Kerr
Virginia (Ginny) Grille Kerr of Lynchburg died October 24, 2024. She was the wife of John Martin Kerr for over 64 years. Ginny was born at home in Falls Church, Virginia, June 15, 1935, the daughter of the late David Kemper and Miriam Buckley Grille. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, brother, sister, a son in law, a grandson in law, and her precious great granddaughter.Mrs. Kerr attended Virginia Tech and graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1956. She was a member of Kappa Omicron Phi, a Home Economics honorary society.Mrs. Kerr married John (Jack) Martin Kerr in 1956 while he was employed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. While in Tennessee they had two children, Sharon and John, Jr. They came to Lynchburg in 1961. They had two daughters, Patricia and Mary Anne in Lynchburg.Mrs. Kerr was a member of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church since 1961 where she was a deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, and choir member for many years.Mrs. Kerr had Richland Hills Nursery School in their home for 15 years and later was a substitute teacher at the Brookville school complex. She was a member of PEO (Philanthropic Education Organization) since 1990 and was president for Chapter BC for two years. She was a member of the American Association of University Women for many years and was also the president of the Lynchburg Branch for 2 years. She was active in both the Women’s Club of Lynchburg and later in the Fort Hill Women’s Club. Ginny was active as a leader and volunteer while her children were involved in the 4-H program. Ginny loved to play bridge and would play anytime she could. She continued playing cards until her death. She also enjoyed travel and she and Jack visited 44 foreign countries and 49 states, many more than once. She and her husband maintained and divided their time between their residence on Timberlake Drive and Brookville Ln.Ginny and Jack have four children, Sharon K. Johnston and family of Bedford, VA, Dr. John M. Kerr, Jr. and family of Tega Cay, SC, Patricia K. Hoar and family of Moyock, NC, and Mary Anne K. Wade and family of Amherst, VA. Ginny was proudest of her children and grandchildren who all have college degrees and was thrilled with each new great grandchild. Ginny dearly loved her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.A service celebrating her life and faith will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 3, 2024 at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. M. Anghaarad Teague Dees officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
