Walter Joseph Walowac
Walter “Wally” Walowac, 90, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 23, 2022. Born in Logan, West Virginia to the late Joseph and Anna Walowac, he is also preceded in death by his loving wife, June.
Wally attended Marshall University where he was a leading scorer for the Thundering Herd. He was inducted into the Marshall Hall of Fame in 1985 and into the West Virginia Hall of Fame in 1980. Following graduation, Wally was drafted by the NBA Milwaukee Hawks but decided instead to play in the Industrial League for the Goodyear Wingfoots. His career led him to Salem, VA where he raised his family and was employed by Brad Ragan and Goodyear. Wally was an avid sportsman who loved the outdoors and loved talking sports with fellow fans.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, June (Chip) Malus, Lisa (David) Dixon, and Julie (Bobby) Rogers; grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike) Graybill, Alli (Damon) Gettier. Holly (Michael) Lawrence, Matt (Kristine) Dixon; great-grandchildren, Paige and Evan Graybill, Keegan and DJ Gettier, Logan and Hadley Lawrence, and Emory and Landon Dixon.
The family wishes to thank his neighbors and his “buddies at Salem Y” for their love, support and friendship. You all enriched his life tremendously. Thank you, “TEAM WALLY”.
The family will welcome friends on Friday, October 28, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Chris Kingery officiating. Interment immediately following at Sherwood Memorial Park.
